Hi! Stumbled onto this blog by accident when looking for a book title that is similar to the name of your blog. Still can't find that book, but this post made a strong impression on me because manipulation is something I've been thinking about. I want to avoid being manipulative as much as I want to avoid being manipulated. But sometimes the lines aren't clear to me. You have to manipulate your children to eat their vegetables sometimes, don't you? I mean, you think of clever ways to help them make the right choice all the time, right? Is that manipulation? When Esther dolled herself up for the king and went to him weeping on behalf of her people, was that manipulation? And if I think of some clever way to distract a friend or colleague from getting into some big trouble - trouble that could affect my personal safety, like a brawl or substance abuse for example - what am I guilty of? Where are the lines? I don't always know. Just wondering what others think.

Hey there! No, I didn't go to the conference. I have been breaking away from traditional curriculum for a while now. Right now I use Learning Adventures unit study, the Bible plus math. The lady who wrote LA, wrote it for her son and now she sells it. I tweek it to fit us.

Sometimes I'm amazed at how "personal" God is...how He can be applying His principles to our lives in just the way we need or the way we'll "get" it. I for one am thankful for His grace and patience on my behalf!!

Ouch. I had to deal with this just today. It was more in a relational way. Just because someone didn't spend their "normal" time with me and spent time with someone else, I felt slighted. How very middle-schoolish of me! Anyway, I battled with those stinky feelings all day. Thanks for this reminder! It's not like I'm going to stop being friends with this person. I need to acknowledge it for what it is that I'm grasping in the wrong place for my worth.

Doing things just to get recognized or praised is, of course, not the way we are to operate. But I think we can genuinely do something with the motives of helping/loving someone else and still desire the appreciation of the recipient. Even God wants us to praise him for His creation, goodness, mercy, ect. It feels good to know that what we did mattered to someone else. Wanting to be noticed or appreciated is HARDLY a "string" unless you are going to stop doing for someone because they don't respond how we'd like. I guess I think it's what we do with the disappointment when we aren't appreciated is the real heart matter.

I totally get what you're saying, but for me, I have to trust God with them as I "send them out" next year. It's already got me worrying. Today I feel very old. Bekah will be 13 next week, and Amanda (who I started babysitting when she was 18 mos. old) is 21 today! Talk about a blur!!

We're all at war. Don't forget it! I wish I had it in me to become more of an 'unplugged' family, but frankly the thought scares me. What will we say to each other? Will we even LIKE spending time with each other? Maybe someday we'll try it, but that takes more courage than I have today.
